How the Boeing 737 MAX was quietly ungrounded in China

How the Boeing 737 MAX was quietly ungrounded in China

On March 10, 2019, an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX, registered as ET-AVJ, plunged to the ground shortly after taking off from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in Ethiopia, marking the second fatal crash of the type in the span of just a few months.

By the following day, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) had issued a notice “requiring domestic airlines to suspend the commercial operations of Boeing 737-8 aircraft by 6 pm based on the management principle of zero tolerance to potential safety hazards and strict control of safety risks, in order to guarantee civil aviation flight safety in China.”

“Restart of Boeing 737-8 commercial operations will be notified after CAAC contacts FAA and Boeing and confirms effective measures are available to guarantee flight safety,” the notice concluded.

Almost three years later, the first Boeing 737 MAX flights began to shuttle passengers domestically in the country, yet the CAAC remained silent. On January 13, 2023, a China Southern Airlines departed from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) to Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (CGO). The aircraft, registered as B-1206, was the first to fly passengers since the CAAC’s announcement in March 2019.

Several airlines have since followed in the footsteps of China Southern Airlines, including Air China, Hainan Airlines and its subsidiary Fuzhou Airlines, Lucky Air, Shandong Airlines, and Shanghai Airlines. In total, 25 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, all -8s, are currently active in China and operated by seven airlines in the country, according to ch-aviation.com data.

Quick decision by the CAAC

The decision to ground the Boeing 737 MAX in China was made within 24 hours after the Ethiopian Airlines accident.

At the time, tensions surrounding the aircraft type were running high. Boeing delivered the first 737 MAX to Malindo Air in May 2017. Less than a year later, in October 2018, the aircraft type saw its first fatal crash when a Lion Air 737 MAX, registered as PK-LQP and operating flight JT610, dove straight into the Java Sea off the coast of Jakarta, Indonesia, shortly after taking off from Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK).

After the Lion Air incident, and prior to the Ethiopian crash, Boeing released a flight crew operating manual (FCOM), and the United States (US) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an emergency airworthiness directive (AD) to help pilots deal with uncommanded stabilizer trim movement. In the two fatal crashes, the uncommanded stabilizer trim movement was carried out by the now-infamous Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS). MCAS was, according to Boeing’s website, a solution put in place by the manufacturer to provide “consistent airplane handling characteristics in a very specific set of unusual flight conditions”.

In total, the two crashes claimed the lives of 346 people.

Initially, the system relied on a single Angle of Attack (AoA) sensor to detect whether the aircraft was flying at a higher-than-normal angle under manual flight conditions. As such, with the sensor feeding faulty information, the 737 MAX’s nose was repeatedly trimmed down during both crashes by the MCAS.

Boeing updated the MCAS to not only rely on both AoA sensors and to act if both agree, but to also prevent the MCAS from repeatedly triggering and overriding the actions of the pilots. That and other concessions, including the FAA having a tighter grip on the aircraft certification process as well as making changes to the Organization Designation Authorization (ODA), as required by the Aircraft Certification, Safety, and Accountability Act (ACSAA), resulted in the FAA ungrounding the 737 MAX in November 2020.

Many other authorities, including the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), followed suit, yet China and Russia remained outliers. Sanctions imposed on Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine meant that the country was unable to buy new air frames and the 737 MAX has not been operated by Russian airlines since. But the situation in China has been different. Previously, only S7 Airlines had a pair of 737 MAXs in its fleet.

Following its quick decision to ground the type on March 11, 2019, communication from the CAAC has been scarce. In May 2019, the authority issued a release, outlining “three principles for resuming the operation of Boeing 737 MAX-8”. The list includes the re-examination of the aircraft’s airworthiness and the necessary aircraft and pilot training adjustments/modifications, as well as the requirement that the safety problems found during the accident investigations be resolved.

In March 2021, the CAAC announced that it had participated in a press conference organized by the State Council Information Office, examining the air network’s status and development in China, “and Boeing 737 MAX’s returning to service”.

In September 2022, the CAAC announced that it had met with representatives from Boeing in Zhoushan, China, “evaluating the operation of 737MAX” and “to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the aircraft type-based training standards for the improved 737 planes.” Zhoushan is also the location of Boeing’s Completion and Delivery Center (C&DC) for the 737 MAX, where local employees install interiors and paint liveries prior to delivery of the aircraft.

“CAAC will release the second revision of the Aircraft Evaluation Report on Boeing 737 Planes after the problems that have been identified in the meeting are resolved, indicating the process for re-introducing 737MAX planes is nearing conclusion,” the statement continued.

Sudden return of the 737 MAX

On January 12, 2023, the day before the China Southern Airlines 737 MAX carried passengers from CAN to CGO, the CAAC published a statement on its Chinese website stating that the regulator’s Deputy Administrator Hu Zhenjiang had visited staff at Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX).

The announcement stated that Zhenjiang went to PKX to “pay respects to the ground service and security checks that are on the front line of Spring Festival transportation security”.

Another announcement made on February 28, 2023, read that “the Yunnan Regulatory Bureau convened three transportation airlines involved in the supplementary certification of B737-8 aircraft in their jurisdiction and held this operation work exchange seminar”.

The CAAC website also indicated that the three airlines based in Yunnan, a Chinese province in the southwestern part of the country, reported on the work progress of the resumption of service of the 737 MAX, while the administration “notified the specific risks of MAX aircraft operation, and required all airlines in the jurisdiction to make a good assessment in terms of training and risk control, and solidly promote safe operation”.

“In the next step, the Yunnan Regulatory Bureau will strictly review and verify the standards, and conduct review and verification in terms of aircraft modification and personnel qualifications to ensure that the certification work related to the resumption of commercial operations is stable and orderly,” the CAAC concluded.

Yunnan province is home to Lucky Air, which flew a 737 MAX-8 commercially for the first time since the grounding on February 25, 2023. The flight took place between Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) and Fuzhou Changle International Airport (FOC). The province also hosts Kunming Airlines, which has five aircraft of the type in its fleet (two stored, three not taken up (ntu) and three yet to be delivered), and China Eastern Yunnan Airlines, a subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines, which, per planespotters.net data, has six 737 MAX on order and three stored.

So far in 2023, Boeing has delivered 64 aircraft that are actively flying with 16 different airlines, according to ch-aviation.com data. None were taken up by a Chinese carrier.

“[…] our job one right now is helping our airlines in China return airplanes to service. There’s two airlines that have moved out,” commented Brian West, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Executive Vice President of Finance of Boeing, during the Cowen Aerospace/Defense & Industrials Conference on February 15, 2023.

“There’s several that are in the air, generating revenue, but there’s about 90 that still have to return to service and we stand ready to help our customers in that market just as soon as they’re ready and we will follow their cue,” he continued.

However, West also noted that Boeing did have to remarket some of the 737 MAX aircraft, even if the manufacturer’s “intention is to support our critical customers in China and objective would be get them to go back mostly to where they originally were supposed to go”. Three 737 MAXs, registered PS-GPL, PS-GPM, and PS-GPN according to planespotters.net data, originally destined for Kunming Airlines were remarketed to Brazil’s GOL Transportes Aéreos. Three more 737 MAXs, N17285, N57286, and N47288, were remarketed from Lucky Air to United Airlines.

AeroTime approached Boeing for comment.

AAdvantage cuts mileage earning on Alaska saver tickets by 60%

AAdvantage cuts mileage earning on Alaska saver tickets by 60%

For a while, American Airlines’ strengthened relationship with Alaska Airlines had been all sunshine and roses. The two carriers enhanced their reciprocal elite upgrades in January, and our managing editor for news received the royal treatment on American Airlines as an Alaska Airlines MVP 100K. Likewise, some New York-based American elite members have received more upgrades on Alaska’s transcontinental flights.

But on all travel after May 1, AAdvantage will slash mileage earnings on Alaska Airlines saver tickets by 60%, as AwardWallet first reported. Saver is Alaska’s version of basic economy.

We’ve contacted American and Alaska for comments and will update the story when we hear back.

The changes

AARONP.BAUER-GRIFFIN/GC IMAGES

For all travel after May 1, AAdvantage will credit Alaska Airlines saver tickets at a 10% basis (instead of 25%). Existing saver tickets (indicated by an X fare class) with travel dates after May 1 will not be exempt from the decrease.

AA.COM

Let’s take a look at what that means for a one-way, 2,586-mile saver ticket from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK):

As it stood, 25% was already a stingy earning rate, but by dropping this to 10%, AAdvantage members will earn even less on Alaska’s saver tickets.

Sign up for our daily newsletter

For now, Alaska saver tickets still earn the standard 100% mileage accruals if you fly with your Alaska Mileage Plan number. However, if you’re an American elite member, you’ll have to fly with your AAdvantage number to receive your perks.

Related: What is American Airlines elite status worth in 2023?

Bottom line

American will be decreasing earnings from Alaska saver tickets. Earlier this month, AAdvantage’s 2023 elite status year kicked off with a requirement of 40,000 Loyalty Points for its entry-level AAdvantage Gold status (a 33% increase from last year’s Gold status requirements).

By increasing elite status requirements and devaluing earnings on Alaska’s saver tickets, it’s looking like it’ll be harder to qualify for AAdvantage status.

It’s amazing to think how much ridesharing has changed the way people get around. Back in the day you’d need to rely on rental cars or taxis when traveling, while now you can get transportation around the globe within minutes using your smartphone.

Since Uber & Lyft spending is a significant expense for many, I wanted to write a post about the best credit cards to use for ridesharing, plus some overall tips for maximizing value with Uber & Lyft:

  • First I’ll cover the partnerships that exist between credit card issuers and ridesharing companies, which can add significant value
  • Then I’ll talk about the partnerships that exist between airline and hotel loyalty programs, and ridesharing companies
  • Then I’ll talk about the best credit cards to use for ridesharing in general

The best credit card perks with Uber & Lyft

American Express, Capital One, and Chase, each have useful partnerships on some cards with either Uber or Lyft. These can save you significant amounts of money, and can be a great reason to pick up an eligible card. Arguably this is the single best way to maximize value with ridesharing. Let’s go over what’s offered by each card issuer.

American Express card benefits with Uber

American Express & Uber have an ongoing partnership, offering an Uber Cash benefit with select cards (enrollment required). Specifically:

Capital One card benefits with Uber

Capital One & Uber have a partnership, offering 10% cashback plus a complimentary Uber One membership. Specifically, this is a limited time partnership valid through November 14, 2024:

  • The no annual fee Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card (review) offers 10% cashback on all Uber and Uber Eats purchases; this is also available on the the Capital One Savor, Capital One SavorOne Student, and Quicksilver Student
  • The same cards also offer a complimentary Uber One membership, which ordinarily retails for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year; just charge the membership fee to your card, and you’ll automatically receive statement credits for that amount

Chase card benefits with Lyft

Chase & Lyft have a partnership, offering bonus points for spending with Lyft. Currently this partnership is valid through March 2025, and you can earn the following rewards for spending with Lyft, with no caps:

On top of that, the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers a two year Lyft Pink All Access membership. Just link your eligible card to your Lyft account, and you can activate your Lyft Pink All Access membership by December 31, 2024. This ordinarily retails for $199 per year, so is quite a value.

Earn bonus rewards points with Uber & Lyft

In addition to the above partnerships, and in addition to the ability to earn credit card rewards with Uber & Lyft, there are also opportunities to earn airline and hotel points by linking your accounts to these ridesharing companies. I wanted to briefly cover the basics of those partnerships.

Earn bonus airline & hotel points with Lyft

Lyft has partnerships with Alaska Mileage Plan, Delta SkyMiles, and Hilton Honors, so members can earn bonus rewards with their choice of one of those three programs:

  • Alaska and Lyft have a partnership offering 1x Alaska Mileage Plan miles per dollar spent on US and Canada Lyft rides, with no caps on how many miles you can earn
  • Hilton and Lyft have a partnership offering 3x Hilton Honors points per dollar spent on US Lyft private rides, and 2x Hilton Honors points per dollar spent on US Lyft shared rides, on up to $10,000 of spending per year
  • Delta and Lyft have a partnership offering 2x Delta SkyMiles per dollar spent on US airport rides and 1x Delta SkyMiles per dollar spent on all other US Lyft rides, with no caps on how many miles you can earn

Personally I think the Alaska partnership is the most lucrative, followed by the Hilton partnership, followed by the Delta partnership.

Earn bonus hotel points with Uber

Uber has a partnerships with Marriott Bonvoy, so members can earn bonus rewards:

  • Marriott and Uber have a partnership offering 6x Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar spent on Uber Eats deliveries to hotels operating under the Marriott brand (minimum $25 basket), 3x Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar spent on Uber XL, Comfort, and Black rides, and 2x Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar spent on non-hotel deliveries and food pick-ups (minimum $25 basket)

Best personal cards for Uber & Lyft March 2023

Aside from the special partnerships that American Express and Chase have with ridesharing companies, let’s take a look at the personal credit cards that generally offer the best rewards on Uber & Lyft rides, whether you’re looking to earn points or cash back. Again, this excludes any limited time bonus earning opportunities with the above cards.

Below are my favorites, with the return on spending determined based on my valuation of points. In all cases, the cards offer the equivalent of at least a 3% return on Uber & Lyft purchases.

1. Chase Sapphire Reserve®

Reward for rideshare spending: 3x Chase Ultimate Rewards points (which I value at 5.1%)
Card annual fee: $550
Foreign transaction fees: none

The Chase Sapphire Reserve offers 3x points on all travel purchases, and that includes rideshares. This is a great card for Uber & Lyft spending globally.

Reward for rideshare spending: 3% cash back
Card annual fee: $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95. (Rates & Fees)
Foreign transaction fees: 2.7% (Rates & Fees)

The Blue Cash Preferred offers 3% cash back on transit, which includes taxis, ridesharing, parking, tolls, trains, buses, and more. However, with the foreign transaction fees on the card, I’d only recommend using it for purchases in the United States.

Best business cards for Uber & Lyft March 2023

Now that we’ve looked at the best personal credit cards for Uber & Lyft spending, let’s take a look at the most rewarding business cards.

1. Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card

The Ink Business Preferred offers 3x points on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases every anniversary year on travel (including ridesharing), shipping purchases, internet, cable, and phone services, and advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines. So within those limits this is a fantastic card for rideshare spending globally.

Reward for rideshare spending: Up to 2x Amex Membership Rewards points (which I value at 3.4%)

3. Capital One Spark Miles for Business

Reward for rideshare spending: 2x Capital One Spark miles (which I value at 3.4%)

The Capital One Spark Miles offers 2x Spark miles on all purchases, so this isn’t even a bonus category, but rather just a very well rounded return on spending.

Read a review of the Spark Miles for Businessapply for the Spark Miles for Business.

Bottom line

Many people spend a significant amount annually on ridesharing, so it’s worth making sure that you’re maximizing your rewards for your spending with Uber & Lyft.

The partnerships that Amex and Capital One have with Uber, and that Chase has with Lyft, could get you a ton of value. Based on my own situation:

  • I use the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card to maximize value with Lyft, as I earn 10x Chase points and receive a complimentary Lyft Pink membership
  • I take advantage of the monthly Amex Platinum Card Uber credits, which save me $200 per year
  • I’m planning on picking up the no annual fee Capital One SavorOne Card, in order to earn 10% cashback on my Uber and Uber Eats spending, and to receive a complimentary Uber One membership

What’s your credit card strategy for Uber & Lyft spending?

Air Premia to Launch Seoul-Frankfurt Nonstop

Air Premia to Launch Seoul-Frankfurt Nonstop

DALLAS — Korean budget hybrid carrier Air Premia (YP) wants to expand its route network this summer. Additionally, further flights are to be carried out to the US and for the first time to Europe.

At the moment, YP flies regional routes within Asia and another to Los Angeles (LAX), which is the only route to another continent, from its hub Seoul-Incheon International Airport (ICN) in South Korea.

Now the airline plans to continue flying to more destinations outside Asia. From May 22, the airline will operate new routes to Newark Liberty Airport (EWR) and from June 27 to Frankfurt Airport (FRA).

The nonstop ICN-FRA route is expected to be served four times a week, though the route is still pending the necessary approval.

Serving the Popular ICN-FRA Route

The route from Incheon to Frankfurt is already flown by three airlines: Korean Air (KE), Asiana (OZ), and Lufthansa (LH), so YP will probably try to secure market share with cheaper ticket prices against strong competition on the route.

Air Premia markets itself as a hybrid airline. Behind the term is the combination of “acceptable price and premium service,” according to the airline. This is made possible, among other things, by the Dreamliner fleet and the two-class seating.

The airline received its first aircraft in 2021. YP relies on a Dreamliner fleet. It has three Boeing 787-9s and two more will follow. The jets have 309 or 338 seats, each divided into Economy and Premium Economy Class.
