BERLIN (AP) — Germany and the European Union announced Saturday that they have reached an agreement in their dispute over the future of cars with combustion engines, allowing the registration of new vehicles with such engines even after 2035 provided they use climate-neutral fuel only.
EU Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans tweeted that “we have found an agreement with Germany on the future use of e-fuels in cars.”
German Transport Minister Volker Wissing tweeted that the way had been cleared for vehicles with internal combustion engines that only use climate-neutral fuels to be newly registered even after 2035.
“We secure opportunities for Europe by preserving important options for climate-neutral and affordable mobility,” Wissing wrote.
An initial proposal by European Union member countries on new carbon dioxide emission standards for cars had been postponed amid opposition from Germany. The EU had wanted to ban the sale of all new cars with combustion engines from 2035.
Germany had demanded an exemption for cars that burn e-fuels, arguing that they are carbon neutral when produced using renewable energy and carbon captured from the air so they wouldn’t spew further climate-changing emissions into the atmosphere.
Wissing said they had agreed on concrete procedural steps and that a specific timetable has been made binding. “We want the process to be completed by fall 2024,” he added.
Timmermans also wrote that “we will work now on getting the CO2-standards for cars regulation adopted as soon as possible.”
The issue has driven an ideological wedge within the German government between Wissing’s libertarian Free Democratic Party and the environmentalist Green party, which had backed a complete ban on combustion engines.
Germany’s main opposition party, the center-right Union bloc, also opposed an EU-wide ban on combustion engine vehicles, warning that it would harm the country’s prized auto industry.
Critics say battery-electric technology is a better fit for passenger cars and precious synthetic fuels should be used only where no other option is feasible, such as in aviation.

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — “I didn’t engage in risky behavior. I wouldn’t with my children there or without my children there,” Paltrow said when asked about a 2016 ski collision.
Gwyneth Paltrow took the stand on Friday to testify in a trial over a ski crash at a Utah ski resort, where a man claims that the movie star’s recklessness on the slope caused broken ribs, brain damage and lasting physical injuries.
Paltrow and Terry Sanderson, the retired optometrist suing her, are both expected to answer questions about the crash while their attorneys jostle to convince the 8-member jury which skier was positioned downhill and had the right of way. The actor-turned-lifestyle influencer has said that Sanderson was responsible for the crash.
Paltrow’s heavily anticipated testimony comes halfway into the trial and on the final afternoon Sanderson’s attorneys could compel her to testify. Throughout the week in Utah, her attorneys have asked for special restrictions, including limiting photography both in the courtroom and in the public parking lot outside — where a rope cordons off Paltrow’s entrance and exit paths.
Her testimony could last longer than an hour and is expected to mirror what she said in a previous deposition about how she “froze” when the crash happened.
“We came crashing down together. This man was behind me on the mountain,” she said in November 2020. “My knee – and our skis — were still sort of tangled up. Our bodies were almost spooning and I moved away quickly. And my knee splayed open, and I was in shock.”
Next week, Paltrow’s team is expected to call to the stand medical experts, ski instructors and her two children, Moses and Apple.
After the collision, Sanderson sent his daughters an email with the subject line: “I’m famous … At what cost?” One of the daughters wrote back: “I also can’t believe this is all on GoPro.”
GoPro cameras are commonly worn by outdoor athletes and patrons of upscale ski resorts to capture action sports.
Sanderson’s daughter, Shae Herath, testified Friday that she didn’t know whether GoPro footage existed, despite her email. She said her father told her over the phone that he assumed there must be GoPro footage of the collision — from someone on the crowded run with a camera affixed to their helmet.
“There was this big, blood curdling scream. Someone would’ve looked,” Herath said, recalling the conversation with her father about how Paltrow shrieked during their collision.
While Sanderson’s attorneys have focused on their client’s deteriorating health, Paltrow’s legal team has intrigued the jury with recurring questions about the mysterious, missing GoPro footage. No video footage has since been located or entered as evidence.
The trial thus far has shone a spotlight on Park City, Utah — the posh ski town known for rolling out a red carpet for celebrities each January during the Sundance Film Festival — and skiers-only Deer Valley Resort, where Paltrow and Sanderson collided. The resort is among the most upscale in North America, known for sunny slopes, après-ski champagne yurts and luxury lodges.
The proceedings have delved deep into the 76-year-old Sanderson’s medical history and personality changes, with attorneys questioning whether his deteriorating health and estranged relationships stemmed from the collision or natural process of aging.
After a judge threw out Sanderson’s earlier $3.1 million lawsuit, Sanderson then claimed damages of “more than $300,000.” Paltrow has countersued for a symbolic $1 and attorney fees. The amount of money at stake for both sides pales in comparison to the typical legal costs of a multiyear lawsuit, private security detail and expert witness-heavy trial.
Lawyers for Paltrow spent much of Thursday raising questions about Sanderson’s mentions of their client’s wealth and celebrity as well as what they called his “obsession” with the lawsuit.
The first three days of the trial featured testimony from medical experts, Sanderson’s personal doctor, a ski companion and his daughter, who said she noticed post-concussion symptoms less than a year after the accident.
Her lawyers Thursday asked Sanderson’s daughter whether her father thought it was “cool” to collide with a celebrity like Paltrow, the Oscar-winning star of “Shakespeare in Love” and founder-CEO of lifestyle brand, Goop.
Paltrow’s attorneys have cast doubt on Sanderson’s medical experts and suggested that the lawsuit could be an attempt to exploit her fame and celebrity.

Since the day Brody the Saint Bernard was brought home, he has had a super sweet relationship with his 93-year-old neighbor. It was love at first sight for the big furry boy, and he has been enamored by Sally since the moment they first met.
In fact, their bond is so beautiful that Brody will sometimes scamper over to Sally’s house to see what she’s up to three to four times in a single day!
It was on his first day home with his new family that Brody met Sally. He had hardly even settled in before he took a trip next door.
“I had just given him a bath, and I went in the house and he was gone,” said Brody’s dad, Dave.
First they searched their house. But Brody was nowhere to be found. Sure enough, he had snuck next door to neighbor, Sally Reenhorn’s house.
Since the 93-year-old lives alone, and doesn’t have a dog of her own, she didn’t have any dog treats on hand. So she worked with what she had, and fed the fetching boy some stale bread. But Brody didn’t mind. He gobbled it right up, and even asked for more.
“I thought, well, maybe he wants some old bread. And he loved it! And to this day, you will not believe it, he will not take dog food from me! He only wants bread from me,” said Sally.
Since the day that Brody was brought home at 12-weeks-old, he has made it his mission to sneak away and see his sweet friend, Sally. What does Brody do once he arrives? Well, he puts his big furry paws up on Sally’s window and waits until she sees he’s shown-up for a visit, of course.
Sometimes he heads inside with her and they snuggle-up on the couch to watch TV. Other times, he likes to follow her around outside while she tends to the flowers and plants in her gorgeous garden.
But then after Sally had a heart-attack, and the difficult decision had to be made for her to be moved into a senior living facility, her furry best friend became super sad.
The devoted dog didn’t give up. Four months after Sally left, he continued to run next door and put his big burly paws up on her window, hoping for a visit.
“He just went over there every day, but there were no more treats, so he would just stay there and sit there and fall asleep on the porch. So I’d have to call him back or drag him back,” said Dave.
So they started taking Brody on weekly trips to see his long lost best friend. It didn’t matter that she had moved away, Brody was never going to forget Sally.

When a tiny baby moose fell into a lake, it struggled to stay above the surface. Plus, its poor mother was forced to stand helplessly on the water’s edge, unable to save her baby from drowning.
But luckily, there were a few fishermen nearby, and they were willing to do whatever it took to help get the calf to safety.
When a few fishermen happened upon a baby moose stranded in the rocky water, they weren’t quite sure what to do. They didn’t want to hurt the tiny calf or get themselves into a sticky situation with its protective mother. But it was clear by the way the mama moose was looking at her calf that she, too, wasn’t quite sure how to get her baby out of the unsafe situation.
However, the fishermen decided that it would be for the best to allow the mother moose the time and space to rescue her baby by herself.
“We started looking around where the noise was coming from, and we spotted a baby moose struggling to get on the land, so we decided it was best to let nature take its course by letting the momma help its young,” said one of the fishermen.
So an hour later, they circled back on the lake so they could check to make sure the calf had gotten to safety. But when they arrived, they saw that the baby was still in the water, whimpering and struggling to get to shore. The calf was obviously exhausted and blowing bubbles out of its nose.
Now was the time for them for them to step in and help save the struggling moose! So together, two of the fishermen carefully lifted the little calf from the rocky water. They carried the beautiful baby up onto the shore and made sure it was a safe distance away from the rocky edge. It was shaking and shivering after being in the chilly water, but they were so happy to see it stand up all on its own!
Initially, the baby stayed close by and started to follow the fishermen back to the water. So they decided to stick around the area until they knew that the baby had been reunited with its mama.
